President Yoweri Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, on Thursday, 20 August 2026, presided over the retirement ceremony of 19 General Officers at State House, Entebbe. The President congratulated the retiring officers for their contribution to the UPDF and the country, commending them for upholding discipline, patriotism, integrity and commitment to duty throughout their careers. “First of all, I congratulate the Generals for the great contribution they made to the UPDF. The UPDF and NRM have been able to build security,” Museveni said. He urged the retirees to remain committed to their families and communities and to use the experience gained during their military service to continue supporting society. The President specifically advised them to prioritise safe investments such as treasury bonds and fixed accounts that generate steady returns before venturing into capital-intensive businesses. Among those who retired are Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Lt Gen Charles Angina, Maj Gen Abel Kandiho, Maj Gen Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, Maj Gen Apollo Kasiita Gowa and Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda, alongside 12 Brigadier Generals. Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Sam Okiding noted that the officers had made significant contributions to the transformation of the UPDF and the maintenance of peace and security. Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka urged the retiring officers to continue serving the country as ambassadors of the UPDF even after leaving active service. The retirement of the 19 generals formed part of a larger send-off that saw a total of 1,817 officers and militants retire in August 2026. The ceremony marked the formal end of long and distinguished careers for some of the force’s most senior officers and the beginning of a new chapter of civilian life and continued national contribution.
