A school bus ferrying pupils from King David Junior School Ndejje overturned in a tragic accident in Kapchorwa District on Thursday evening, leaving at least 20 pupils and one adult dead.

The bus, registration number UA 108BQ, was returning from an educational tour to the popular Sipi Falls when the accident occurred around 8:00 p.m. at Chekwatit village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county. According to officials, the vehicle developed mechanical problems before the crash.

Kapchorwa Resident District Commissioner Bayole Stanley initially confirmed 19 deaths (18 pupils and one adult). However, updated reports from police and other sources indicate 20 pupils and the school's founder and director, Mr. Tadeo Ssekade, perished in the incident, bringing the confirmed death toll to 21. Several other pupils and crew members sustained injuries and were rushed to Kapchorwa General Hospital for treatment.

Warnings ignored? Area leaders and witnesses allege that locals had warned the driver about the bus's faulty condition earlier in the journey, but the trip continued. Twalla Fadil, General Secretary of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and area MP, expressed deep sorrow, stating the accident "could have been avoided" if the warnings had been heeded. Uganda Police Force spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed the fatal crash and noted that rescue operations were conducted at the scene, with investigations into the exact cause, including the reported mechanical failure and possible driver decisions, ongoing.
