Anxious parents and guardians flocked to King David Junior School in Ndejje, Wakiso District, on Friday morning following the tragic bus crash in Kapchorwa that claimed the lives of at least 20 pupils and one adult.

The bus (registration UA 108BQ), carrying pupils returning from an educational tour to Sipi Falls, crashed around 8pm on Thursday in Chekwatit village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo sub-county. Reports indicate the driver lost control, possibly after mechanical problems developed, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, hit a stone, and overturn.

Kapchorwa Resident District Commissioner Bayole Stanley confirmed 19 deaths (18 pupils and one adult), revising earlier unconfirmed figures as high as 23. Several other pupils and crew members sustained injuries and were rushed to Kapchorwa General Hospital, Kaserem Health Centre IV, and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. Bodies were taken to Kapchorwa Mortuary for identification and postmortem.

Parents in shock. Videos circulating on social media show distraught parents gathered at the school gates, seeking information about their children. The atmosphere at King David Junior School remains tense, with heavy police presence as authorities assist families. Area leaders, including local MP David Sserukenya, have been at the scene coordinating support, including ambulances for victims.

Local MP and Patriotic League of Uganda General Secretary Twalla Fadil claimed residents had warned the driver about the bus's mechanical issues, but the journey continued. Police have not fully confirmed these details but say investigations into the exact cause — including possible mechanical failure — are ongoing.

Government response. In a swift move, Acting Education Minister Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo suspended all school trips and educational excursions nationwide with immediate effect. The ministry cited the need for a comprehensive review of safety guidelines before such activities resume. A circular with detailed instructions is expected soon.

This tragedy is the latest in a string of road accidents involving school buses on study tours in recent weeks, including incidents in Mukono and Bugweri, raising serious concerns about vehicle maintenance, driver oversight, and safety protocols for student travel. Uganda Police Force spokesperson Michael Kananura earlier confirmed emergency responders were at the scene and urged calm as investigations continue. Identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released.
