Dr Moses Mukose, a former Inspectorate of Government commissioner and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Busoga Governor, has been released on police bond after overnight detention. Police arrested him on Saturday, 1 August 2026, at Mulago National Referral Hospital. Officers accused him of “wandering” or disobeying lawful orders on the sixth floor of the VIP wing — the same floor where opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye is receiving treatment under heavy security. Mukose’s son, Arnold Anthony Mukose, said his father had gone to the hospital to visit his father-in-law, who has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on that floor for the past two weeks. The patient’s room is adjacent to Besigye’s. Human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza, who first publicised the detention, said security personnel later claimed Mukose had been sent by activist Ingrid Turinawe to spy on them. Turinawe dismissed the allegation as laughable. Mukose was held at Mulago Police Station for more than 20 hours before his release. Police charged him in connection with being on the restricted floor. Besigye remains under tight security at the hospital after collapsing in court last week and being admitted to intensive care. Access to the floor has been heavily restricted. The incident has drawn criticism from opposition figures who say it reflects excessive security around the veteran politician.
