Rising demand for charcoal continues to put pressure on Uganda's indigenous forests, prompting environmental experts and authorities to advocate for alternative energy solutions and reforestation drives. As communities rely on wood fuel for cooking and income, unchecked harvesting has led to significant deforestation in several districts.
The Ministry of Environment and related agencies are promoting modern cooking technologies and biomass alternatives to reduce environmental degradation, a challenge that coincides with the current hot and dry weather forecast, which could further stress ecosystems and agriculture.
Conservationists warn that without urgent intervention, biodiversity loss and climate impacts will intensify, though community tree-planting programmes and waste-to-value projects offer hope as Uganda balances development needs with environmental protection.
