Uganda’s arts community is mourning the death of veteran playwright, actor, musician and theatre director Alex Mukulu, who has passed away at the age of 72. Born in 1954 in Misebe, Ssingo County in Buganda, Mukulu studied Film and Drama at Makerere University after attending Kololo Secondary School. He went on to become one of the most influential figures in Ugandan theatre over more than four decades. His best-known works include the plays “30 Years of Bananas,” “Wounds of Africa,” “Guest of Honour,” “Excuse Me Mzungu,” and “Journey to Self-Realization,” the latter performed at the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala in 2007. He was also a musician and composer whose work cut across political, social and cultural themes. Mukulu was widely respected for using theatre as a tool to mirror society, challenge power and reflect the lived experiences of ordinary Ugandans. In recent years he returned to the stage with productions that continued to spark conversation. Tributes have described him as a forefather of modern Ugandan theatre whose contribution paved the way for younger generations of actors, playwrights and performers.
