President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to veteran playwright, actor, director and musician Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu, who passed away on 15 August 2026 at the age of 72. The announcement was made by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda, who said the National Organising Committee is already engaging with the bereaved family to organise a befitting send-off. “I wish to inform you that the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. Museveni, has granted an official burial to the fallen statesman, Mr Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu. Accordingly, the N.O.C. is engaging with the bereaved family to organise a befitting send-off on August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza,” Babalanda stated. Mukulu’s body was taken to the Uganda National Theatre for public viewing, where members of the arts fraternity, family and members of the public paid their last respects. A funeral service was also planned at Namirembe Cathedral before the burial at his ancestral home. Mukulu was widely regarded as one of Uganda’s most influential theatre practitioners. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he used satire, drama and music to examine political and social realities. His notable works include “30 Years of Bananas,” “Wounds of Africa,” “Guest of Honour,” “Muzukulu wa Kabangala” and “Journey to Self-Realization,” which was performed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala in 2007. The decision to accord him an official burial is recognition of his significant contribution to Uganda’s cultural and creative industry. Tributes from artists, cultural leaders and the public have continued to pour in since his death, describing him as a pioneer who shaped generations of performers. King Musah Media once again extends condolences to the family, friends and the entire creative fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
