Uganda’s football community is mourning the death of SC Villa captain and national team player David Owori, who was fatally assaulted by suspected robbers outside his home in Makindye, Kampala. The 27-year-old, popularly known as Colgate, was attacked on the evening of 4 August 2026 as he approached his residence. Witnesses said a group of assailants struck him with paving stones after he resisted attempts to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. He was left unconscious at the scene. Owori was first rushed to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to Case Hospital for specialised care. He succumbed to severe head and brain injuries the following day. SC Villa described the loss as profound. “We have lost more than a player — we have lost a leader, brother and friend,” the club said in a statement. The club announced that his number 15 shirt would be retired in his honour. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) paid tribute to Owori as “a leader and an inspiration to a generation,” noting that the country had lost a son, a leader and a star. Owori was a versatile player who featured as a right-back and midfielder. He helped SC Villa secure a record 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024 and had previous stints with Vipers SC as well as clubs in Spain and Sweden. He also earned caps for the Uganda Cranes. Kampala Metropolitan Police confirmed that detectives were following leads to identify and apprehend those responsible. The killing has reignited public concern over violent street crime in the capital, coming shortly after similar incidents involving other sports personalities. Parliament observed a moment of silence in Owori’s honour, while calls for swift justice continue from the football fraternity and the wider public.
