The National Unity Platform has released the official send-off programme for former Busiro South Member of Parliament Charles Matovu, who died on Thursday evening at Mulago National Referral Hospital at the age of 41.According to the programme, prayers and a tribute session will be held today, Friday 23 October, at 3:00pm at the NUP Headquarters in Makerere-Kavule to honour his contribution to the party and the struggle for change. On Saturday 24 October, a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St Bruno Sserunkuuma Catholic Church, Kasenge, at 11:00am. This will be followed by a vigil at his family home in Kungu-Lutale along Nakawuka Road.Burial will take place on Sunday 25 October at 2:00pm at his ancestral home in Kungu-Lutale village, Wakiso District.Matovu, an electrical engineer who represented Busiro South in the 11th Parliament on the NUP ticket, died after developing a sudden health complication earlier in the week. He was first admitted to Lubaga Hospital before being transferred to Mulago, where he passed away. NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya confirmed the death on Thursday night. Party President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) described the news as “very disturbing” and “shocking,” noting that Matovu had been fighting an election petition against NRM’s Kenan Opio at the time of his death. The High Court in Entebbe had commenced hearing of the petition on 16 October.Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa also paid tribute, describing Matovu as a dedicated legislator and a valuable member of the Parliamentary football team who contributed to Uganda’s success in East African Parliamentary games. “My condolences go out to his family, the people of Busiro South, and the country at large. May he rest in eternal peace,” Tayebwa said.Meanwhile, social media has been awash with unverified claims surrounding both Matovu’s death and the January 2026 election in Busiro South. Some posts allege that Matovu believed he was being followed in the days before his illness and that he may have been poisoned. Others have circulated allegations about the identity and background of Kenan Opio and claims of irregularities at the Wakiso District tally centre. These claims remain unproven, and no official investigation into the cause of Matovu’s death has been publicly announced.NUP MP George Musisi recalled that on 16 January, Matovu had sought help to write a formal complaint to the Electoral Commission after ballot boxes from Katabi Town Council were allegedly tampered with. As the family and party prepare for the burial, attention remains focused on both the personal loss of a young legislator and the unresolved legal questions surrounding the Busiro South parliamentary seat.
