Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom chairperson Erias Lukwago has been transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialised medical treatment amid concerns over his deteriorating health while in detention.Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, said his client was moved from the Joint Clinical Research Centre in Lubowa to Mulago on Monday morning after his condition reportedly worsened. Sseggona appealed to Ugandans of all faiths to pray for Lukwago, saying his health remains a major concern and that he urgently needs specialised treatment in India.According to his legal team, Lukwago previously underwent cervical disc replacement surgery in India and requires post-operative review. He is also seeking specialist assessment for gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatus hernia, among other chronic conditions. His lawyers argue that his spinal complications and gastrointestinal issues have worsened in custody and that prison medical facilities are not adequately equipped for the care he needs.Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine offered a different account, telling media that Lukwago had been taken to Mulago for routine specialised treatment and was “sick but not in a critical condition.”Lukwago is facing charges of misprision of treason and has made several attempts to secure bail, citing the need for specialised medical treatment abroad and the fact that he has spent more than 60 days on remand without trial. His lawyers continue to push for his release so he can travel for further treatment.
