Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has demanded a public apology from a journalist accredited to Parliament after a video of his remarks was edited in a manner that portrayed him as demeaning nurses.Addressing the House on Wednesday, Tayebwa named John Paul Ssebaduka of CBS FM as the journalist who edited footage of his comments made during Tuesday’s plenary sitting and shared the altered version on his personal online platform, SPJ Exclusive Media.Tayebwa said that while discussing the proposed Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at Mbarara University, he had praised nurses as professionals who can become “amazing leaders,” some of them holding PhDs. The edited video, he said, created the opposite impression and triggered widespread criticism and abuse on social media, some of which reached his family. He told Parliament that he had spoken to the journalist, who offered a private apology. Tayebwa rejected that as insufficient. “I told him to make a public apology because you cannot tarnish my name in public and apologise to me in private,” he said. The Deputy Speaker disclosed that he has referred the matter to the Uganda Communications Commission for consideration and has also asked Parliament’s Corporate Affairs Department to handle the issue in line with guidelines on accurate reporting of House proceedings. He warned against the distortion of parliamentary proceedings by accredited journalists.
