In a strategic move signaling fresh momentum for Uganda's largest opposition force, National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) has appointed Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe as the party's new Acting President.

Nambeshe, the long-serving Manjiya County MP and a key figure in NUP's parliamentary ranks, made the announcement on X on Saturday, expressing deep gratitude for the trust placed in him during what he described as a "pivotal time" for the movement. "Your confidence in my leadership during this pivotal time is both humbling & inspiring," Nambeshe wrote.

The appointment comes weeks after NUP faced a setback in the Kalangala District Woman MP by-election, with party insiders linking the reshuffle to a need for renewed energy in the acting role. Nambeshe replaces Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, who had held the position for approximately four months while Bobi Wine remains abroad.

In a follow-up statement, Nambeshe paid tribute to his predecessor, thanking her for her "exceptional service, committed leadership, & unwavering dedication" to the movement. He pledged to uphold the party's core values, foster unity, and work closely with Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya and the entire secretariat. Bobi Wine responded swiftly with a message of solidarity: "Let's get to work comrade, the struggle continues."

A seasoned operator with cross-party roots. A former NRM member who broke ranks over the 2017 age-limit removal, Nambeshe has emerged as one of NUP's most reliable operators. He previously served as Acting President in 2021 during Bobi Wine's travels and currently holds positions as opposition Chief Whip and Parliamentary Commissioner. His elevation underscores the party's preference for experienced legislators to steady the ship while its charismatic leader operates from afar.
