President Yoweri Museveni held talks with Tanzanian businessman Rostam Aziz, the incoming majority shareholder of Nation Media Group (NMG), at State House Entebbe on Friday, July 17, 2026. The meeting comes as efforts continue to resolve the government-ordered closure of several NMG outlets, including NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, Spark TV, KFM, and Dembe FM.

Photographs released by the Presidency show President Museveni alongside Aziz and senior NMG executives, including Georgia Mutagaywa, Chief of Staff at Taarifa Limited, the entity through which Aziz is acquiring a controlling stake in the media group.

The engagement is widely viewed as a continuation of earlier discussions between Aziz and President Museveni's son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces. In early July, Aziz, accompanied by his son Saam Aziz and other executives, met Gen. Muhoozi at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe. During those talks, NMG representatives reportedly committed to pursuing a more "patriotic, balanced, and objective" approach to journalism.

Gen. Muhoozi subsequently indicated on X that he would submit a detailed report of the discussions to President Museveni, who would make the final decision on reopening the affected media outlets — reinforcing that the military chief was acting with the knowledge and eventual authority of his father, the long-serving President.

Security agencies closed NMG's Ugandan operations in late June 2026, citing content considered prejudicial to state interests. Armed personnel prevented access to the Daily Monitor's printing facilities and took the broadcast outlets off air. The shutdown has affected more than 500 journalists and media workers and raised concerns about press freedom in Uganda.

As of Saturday, July 18, no official announcement has been made regarding the reopening of the outlets. The latest meeting between President Museveni and Rostam Aziz is seen as a significant development in negotiations aimed at restoring operations under new understandings between the media house and the government.

King Musah Media will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on this matter. This report is based on official statements, photographs from the Presidency, and public posts by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
