Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, ordered the immediate shutdown of key Nation Media Group outlets, including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, and Spark TV, triggering widespread condemnation from local and international press freedom advocates.

Security personnel surrounded the media group's premises in Kampala on the night of June 28, cutting off access and electricity. The army chief publicly stated he does not believe in a free press and that the outlets would only reopen with his personal approval. The government later indicated President Museveni had ordered a security inquiry into the matter.

The move has raised serious concerns about media independence. Nation Media Group described the incident as a "military siege." As of mid-July, discussions on reopening continue amid global scrutiny from press freedom organisations.
