The late Gen. (Rtd) Hon. Moses Ali, former Second Deputy Prime Minister and one of Uganda's longest-serving public servants, has been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Adjumani District after an emotional farewell that drew leaders, military officials, family, and thousands of mourners from across the country.

The burial on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, marked the end of several days of national mourning that included Janaza prayers in Kampala, a lying-in-state at Parliament, and a special gathering at Paridi Stadium in Adjumani.

Final journey and ceremony. Mourners gathered at Paridi Stadium in the morning for a special ceremony involving representatives from the 15 districts of West Nile. This was followed by Janaza prayers at Abirichaku before the burial at 4:00 PM. The solemn event brought together dignitaries, military personnel, and local communities to honour a man widely respected for his humility, service, and dedication to his people.

Presidential condolence message. In a special message, President Yoweri Museveni praised the late Gen. Ali as a passionate advocate who deeply cared for his people and contributed immensely to the nation's development, especially in the West Nile region. Earlier tributes in Parliament highlighted Ali's sense of humour, humility, and commitment to public service, with Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Hon. Betty Nambooze, Minister Balaam Barugahara, and others remembering him fondly as a true patriot and "man of the people."

A remarkable legacy. Born in 1939, Gen. Moses Ali rose through the ranks as a military officer, lawyer, and politician. He served in multiple high-level roles, including as Second Deputy Prime Minister and MP for Adjumani West until his passing on July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 87. His death has prompted an outpouring of respect from across the political spectrum, underscoring his role as a unifying figure who served Uganda with distinction for over five decades.
