Uganda is in mourning following the death of one of its longest-serving public servants, Rt. Hon. Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who passed away on Saturday afternoon at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. The veteran politician and former Second Deputy Prime Minister breathed his last at 4:25 p.m., according to close associates. He was 87 years old.

Businessman and former MP Captain Mike Mukula confirmed the sad news, describing the deceased as "a dear friend, distinguished patriot, freedom fighter, and statesman," and extending condolences to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the government, the bereaved family, and the people of Adjumani District and the West Nile sub-region.

Born on April 5, 1939, in Meliaderi Village, Adjumani District, Gen. Moses Ali had a storied career spanning military service, law, and politics. He rose through the ranks of the Uganda Army, participated in major historical events including the 1971 coup, and later played a key role in the bush war negotiations that helped bring peace and stability.

A trained lawyer with degrees from Makerere University and the Law Development Centre, Ali served in various high-level positions, including multiple stints as Deputy Prime Minister (Third, First, and Second), Minister of Finance, Internal Affairs, and other portfolios under both former President Idi Amin and President Museveni.

He was re-elected as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West in the 2026 general elections and sworn in on May 13, 2026, making him one of the oldest serving legislators. He had recently exited the cabinet after decades of distinguished service, often referred to as the "Lion of Adjumani" for his contributions to infrastructure, youth empowerment, and socio-economic programs in northern Uganda.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the political divide, with many describing him as a symbol of resilience, patriotism, and national unity. Further details on funeral arrangements are expected from the family and government in the coming hours. His death will necessitate a by-election in the Adjumani West constituency.
