Approaching two years in detention since his dramatic abduction from Kenya in November 2024, veteran opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye's treason trial has become a litmus test for justice, judicial independence, and political tolerance in Uganda. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, physician, and former bush war ally of President Museveni, was seized in Nairobi and resurfaced days later in a Ugandan military court, charged alongside Hajj Obeid Lutale with treason and related offences.

What began as a military proceeding — later challenged and partly shifted to the High Court following Supreme Court rulings on civilian trials — has been marked by repeated procedural battles, health concerns for the accused, and claims of state interference. The obstacles facing Besigye's defence team have been striking: lawyer Erias Lukwago was arrested in mid-June 2026 and detained before facing his own treason-related charges, while Kenyan senior counsel Martha Karua was detained at Entebbe airport and deported without clear justification while attempting to support the team.

Compounding the legal team's difficulties are public statements attributed to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Besigye and Lutale have filed suit against the general over social media posts they say include threats and prejudicial comments presuming guilt; Muhoozi has sought dismissal of the application, describing the claims as hearsay.

President Museveni has also weighed in during national addresses, criticising Besigye for what he described as deliberate delays in facing trial, while the Uganda Law Society has pushed back, arguing such remarks risk constituting executive interference and undermining the presumption of innocence.

With prolonged pre-trial detention now nearing two years and continuing disputes over defence representation, the Besigye matter remains far from resolution. However it concludes, its handling will shape perceptions of Uganda's democratic credentials for years to come.
