President Yoweri Museveni has formally presented Ambassador Olara Otunnu as Uganda’s candidate for United Nations Secretary-General. The presentation took place on Monday at State House Entebbe during a meeting with ambassadors representing members of the United Nations Security Council. Museveni urged the envoys to convey Uganda’s full endorsement of Otunnu to their respective governments. He described the veteran diplomat as a candidate with the experience, integrity and diplomatic credentials required to lead the world body. The President highlighted Uganda’s record in promoting regional peace and security, as well as its long-standing role as a host of refugees, as values that underpin the country’s support for Otunnu’s candidature. Otunnu, a former UN Under-Secretary-General and the first Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict (1998–2005), previously served as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1980–1985) and as President of the Security Council in December 1981. He also held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs. His nomination places him among the candidates seeking to succeed the current UN Secretary-General when the term ends later this year.
