Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced that he will stand for the presidency in the 2031 general election. In a series of posts on X, the 52-year-old military chief stated: “I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God.” He further predicted a landslide victory, saying: “With my great father, Mzee’s, support I will get 90% in the elections in 2031.” Gen Muhoozi, who also chairs the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has long been regarded as a potential successor to President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986 and was re-elected for a seventh term in January 2026. This is not the first time the CDF has signalled presidential ambitions. He had previously indicated interest in contesting the 2026 election but later stepped aside and supported his father’s candidacy. The latest declaration has reignited public discussion about Uganda’s political succession and the future role of the military in civilian politics. Government spokesperson Alan Kasujja has said that decisions about future presidential candidacies will be made by President Museveni and the ruling NRM party when the time comes.
