Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi on Friday visited detained opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye at Mulago National Referral Hospital and said he is steadily recuperating. “I paid a visit to Dr Kiiza Besigye today morning at Mulago Hospital, where he is hospitalised. He is steadily recuperating and I wished him quick recovery. I thank the team of medical workers that are attending to him,” Baryomunsi stated. Besigye has been in detention for nearly two years and is currently facing a treason-related trial at the High Court together with Hajj Obeid Lutale and Capt Denis Oola. He was admitted to Mulago after collapsing in the dock during court proceedings on 29 July. The minister’s visit comes as debate continues over Besigye’s health, access to his preferred medical care, and the conditions of his prolonged detention. Family members and supporters have previously called for independent medical attention and raised concerns about his treatment while in custody. Court proceedings in the treason case have faced repeated delays linked to Besigye’s health status.
