The government has ordered a 100-day crackdown on dilapidated and unroadworthy commuter taxis, commonly known as “Ganyegenya,” operating in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. Minister for Works and Transport Fred Byamukama announced that police have been directed to impound taxis found in dangerous mechanical condition starting Monday, 24 August 2026. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has provided a parking facility in Nakawa for the seized vehicles. The operation, dubbed Operation Ganyegenya, targets 14-seater taxis with serious defects including faulty brakes, worn-out tyres, defective steering, weakened chassis, malfunctioning lights, doors held by ropes or glue, and torn seats. “We cannot continue putting people’s lives at risk at the expense of votes or strikes,” Byamukama said. He warned that threats of industrial action or political consequences would not deter enforcement. The Minister noted that voluntary inspections conducted over the past 60 days found that none of the tested vehicles met roadworthiness standards. He clarified that well-maintained taxis, including newer models, will not be affected. The first phase covers Greater Kampala, including Kampala, Wakiso and surrounding areas, before potential extension to other parts of the country. Key routes mentioned include Katooke Road in Nansana, Gganda-Kyebando, Kalerwe-Gayaza, Nakawa-Luzira and others. Some taxi industry leaders have welcomed the move, saying it will protect passengers and responsible operators. Authorities insist the operation is not a ban on the taxi business but a safety measure to remove vehicles that present an unacceptable danger. Public transport safety remains a long-standing concern in the capital. Whether the 100-day operation delivers lasting change will depend on consistent enforcement and the availability of safer alternatives for both operators and commuters. King Musah Media will monitor the implementation of the crackdown
