Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been released from house arrest after President Yoweri Museveni directed that the restrictions on her movement be lifted. Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced the decision on 25 August 2026, stating that the President had instructed him to free Among and that she would not face prosecution. “Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” Gen Muhoozi posted. Among, who had been under house arrest since mid-May 2026, confirmed her freedom in a statement the following day. “I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” she said. She also thanked Gen Muhoozi for his professionalism and said she looks forward to continuing her work as Woman MP for Bukedea while standing firm with the revolutionary leadership. Among had been confined to her residences following raids linked to investigations into alleged corruption, accumulation of assets and financial management issues at Parliament during her tenure as Speaker. Several senior parliamentary officials were later charged in connection with related cases. Special Forces Command personnel who had been deployed at her homes withdrew after the presidential directive. The release ends more than 100 days of restricted movement for the former Speaker and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female). King Musah Media will continue monitoring political developments surrounding the matter.
