Former Busiro South Member of Parliament Charles Matovu is being laid to rest today, Sunday 25 October 2026, at his ancestral home in Kungu-Lutale village along Nakawuka Road in Wakiso District.

The 41-year-old legislator died on Thursday evening at Mulago National Referral Hospital after developing a sudden health complication earlier in the week. He was first admitted to Lubaga Hospital before being transferred to Mulago for specialised care.

According to the official programme released by the National Unity Platform, a public tribute was held on Friday at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule. On Saturday, a Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Bruno Sserunkuuma Catholic Church in Kasenge, followed by a vigil at the family home.

NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi described Matovu as a brother, comrade and fellow leader who had been fighting an election petition against NRM’s Kenan Opio at the time of his death. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa also paid tribute, praising Matovu’s dedication in the 11th Parliament and his contribution to the Parliamentary football team.

Matovu, an electrical engineer, represented Busiro South from 2021 to 2026. His death has left unresolved questions around both the cause of his sudden illness and the ongoing election petition
