Former Butambala County legislator and National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Buganda Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has been granted bail by the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Grade One Magistrate Amina Wahab ordered Kivumbi to pay a cash bail of Shs 3 million. His sureties were ordered to execute non-cash bonds of Shs 2 million each.

Kivumbi, 55, is facing charges of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society. The prosecution alleges that on 9 July 2026, at Bugoye Village in Gombe Ward, Butambala, he addressed a public gathering and made statements encouraging the public to rise against the government.

The fresh case came after Kivumbi had earlier been granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court on separate terrorism-related charges. He was re-arrested shortly afterwards and remanded again.

NUP Deputy Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya welcomed the court decision, expressing hope that Kivumbi would not be arrested again. He thanked the people of Butambala for their solidarity.

Kivumbi denied the charges. The case continues to attract significant political attention.
