Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been installed as the new Omukama of Tooro, adopting the regnal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

The traditional installation took place early on Tuesday at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal after an overnight procession that began at Rwengoma Palace. The new king and thousands of subjects walked about three kilometres through the city. Rituals included a symbolic battle and the spearing of a bull before he entered the palace, sat on the royal throne, and performed other traditional rites to end the mourning period for the late King Oyo.

President Yoweri Museveni later presided over the formal coronation ceremony at the palace. He congratulated the new king, blessed his reign, and gifted him 100 cows.

In his maiden address, Omukama Nyabongo I paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on 27 August after a 31-year reign. He pledged an inclusive reign that would serve all people of Tooro without discrimination while preserving the kingdom’s culture and traditions. He also called for close cooperation with the central government in advancing development.

The coronation followed a thanksgiving service at St John’s Cathedral led by Bishop Reuben Kisembo. The new king attended with his wife, Queen Rebecca Amoding, and members of the royal family.

The succession had been marked by dispute after sections of the late king’s family insisted he left a biological son as heir. The Babiito clan and kingdom institutions selected Kijanangoma, a cousin of the late king and a long-time broadcaster with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
