At least 22 people have been rescued after a building under construction at Holy City Church in Bwerenga, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, collapsed on Monday evening.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala confirmed that joint rescue teams from the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces pulled the victims from the rubble and evacuated them to Entebbe Grade B Hospital and other nearby facilities for medical attention.

“Rescue operations are ongoing, with approximately 22 people rescued so far and being evacuated to Entebbe Grade B hospital facilities for medical attention. We are working to establish whether anyone remains trapped beneath the rubble,” Kawala said.

The collapsed structure was an extension of the main church building and had reached the fourth floor when it gave way. Police had not confirmed any fatalities by Monday night, and the extent of injuries sustained by those rescued was still being assessed.

The church is led by preacher Brother Ronnie Makabai, whose Holy City Entebbe ministry regularly hosts large religious gatherings along the Kawuku–Bwerenga Road. The incident has raised fresh concerns about construction safety and compliance with building regulations for multi-storey structures.
