The Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese, Rt Rev Reuben Kisembo, has advised the newly installed Omukama of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, to honour his matrimonial vows and remain committed to one wife.

Preaching during the coronation church service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal on Tuesday, Bishop Kisembo reminded the King that as a Christian he had already made vows before God.

“I know Omukama is a Christian. The Christian matrimonial vows give you one wife, one woman. That is the biblical teaching. Since you made vows before God that you will stay with your wife for life, I pray you continue on that line,” the Bishop said.

He cautioned against polygamy, saying it can bring challenges, and urged the King to maintain monogamy with Queen Rebecca Amoding.

Bishop Kisembo also challenged the new monarch to restore accountability and transparency in the management of kingdom resources. He called for a strong administration, proper books of account, and the use of kingdom resources for their intended purposes.

The Bishop further appealed to the Batooro to welcome and support Queen Rebecca, who hails from the Teso community, as she takes on a public role in the kingdom.

Omukama Nyabongo I attended the service with his wife, his mother Yusta Asiimwe Kijanangoma, and other members of the royal family shortly before the formal coronation rituals.
