The High Court in Kampala has heard dramatic testimony in the treason trial of veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, with the first prosecution witness detailing how a covert camera concealed in a mobile power bank was used to record alleged discussions about acquiring weapons and overthrowing the government. Andrew Wilson Orlando, a private security investigator, told Justice Emmanuel Baguma of the Criminal Division that he secretly recorded meetings involving Besigye and Joel Wakayima, a Ugandan based in Switzerland. Wilson said he had been approached by Wakayima to facilitate the supply of weapons — including hand grenades, drones and surface-to-air missiles — and to arrange paramilitary training for between 40 and 60 people. He told court that the discussions included alleged plans to attack Kampala and that Wakayima had proposed detonating a hand grenade at Café Javas along Acacia Avenue because government officials frequented the premises. According to the witness, some of the meetings took place at his apartment, where he used the hidden recording equipment. He also claimed the group discussed using drones and framing attacks on the Allied Democratic Forces. Besigye is being tried alongside Obeid Lutale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola on charges of treason and misprision of treason. The offences carry a maximum penalty of death upon conviction. All the accused deny the charges. Justice Baguma has ruled that the trial can proceed in Besigye’s absence after the court was informed that he had declined to attend despite being medically cleared as fit to stand trial. The testimony has intensified the high-stakes nature of a case that has already drawn significant public and political attention. For the State, the recordings and Wilson’s account form a central pillar of the prosecution. For Besigye’s supporters and legal team, the circumstances of the evidence-gathering and the decision to proceed in his absence raise serious questions about fairness and due process. The trial continues, with the court expected to hear further prosecution witnesses. King Musah Media will keep following the proceedings closely.
