The treason trial of veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused continued before High Court Justice Emmanuel Baguma, with American state witness Andrew Wilson (also known as Orlando) providing detailed testimony about alleged meetings held in Geneva, Athens and Nairobi. Wilson, who said he worked as an undercover informant for Ugandan security services, told court that he secretly recorded discussions involving Besigye and others between 2023 and 2024 using hidden devices, including power banks, watches and flash drives. According to his testimony, the meetings allegedly discussed plans to overthrow the government, including the use of drones to assassinate President Yoweri Museveni, the introduction of counterfeit currency to destabilise the economy, and paramilitary training for opposition supporters. Wilson claimed that Besigye allegedly shared information about the President’s movements and that the group considered attributing any attack to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). He also said some video evidence from a Nairobi meeting was lost after Kenyan police interfered with the recording device. Several video and audio clips were played in court. However, parts of the recordings were unclear, with poor audio quality and questions raised about timestamps on some of the material. Besigye is being tried in absentia due to ill health after previously collapsing in court. His co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola, have been appearing in court. All the accused deny the charges of treason and misprision of treason. The defence has questioned the quality and authenticity of some of the evidence presented. The trial continues. King Musah Media will keep tracking the proceedings.
