Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang has assured Parliament that Uganda is on course to successfully co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports, Ogwang said government has adopted a whole-of-government approach. An inter-sectoral committee has been established to support the Local Organising Committee and key sectoral needs have already been prioritised in the 2026/27 budget with full Cabinet approval.

Significant funding has been allocated, including Shs184.9 billion for a new passenger terminal at Kabalega International Airport in Hoima and Shs5.2 billion released to FUFA. The government is also supporting hotels in Hoima and Masindi through a special credit facility via the Uganda Development Bank to help them meet CAF standards.

Ogwang expressed confidence that Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) will be ready and said government is pushing for Uganda to host the opening ceremony. Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira is expected to be completed by December.

The minister acknowledged recent CAF inspection findings and said all current preparations are based on those recommendations. He dismissed circulating reports that CAF is already looking at alternative hosts, insisting Uganda remains fully committed and on schedule.
